How to use the Latin Resource Notebook
What is a Latin Resource Notebook?
Why would I want to use it?
Why would I want to use it?
Over the years, many folks have created documents to help students be efficient in their Latin Studies. The resources are amazing and have been a great help. After our first year of Latin studies in Challenge, I found out that my children spent a lot of time looking for different resources. Where was that really cool chart for Noun declensions? What color card do I use for adverbs again? I need a different way to study my vocabulary today, where is a new idea?
As we geared up for our second year, I really started to wrap my head around the idea that in many ways our Latin studies are very similar to Essentials.
- You repeat the course material over three years.
- You definitely don't get it mastered every year.
- Nonetheless, if you are consistent with the process that is modeled, you can see significant growth over time.
It dawned on me that we could really use some of the same resources for Latin. Now to be clear, there is MUCH good information in your Challenge Guide and the Henle Latin Books. In many ways, I have just consolidated and color-coded the material. In addition, I have added some ideas for structuring your Latin studies in such a way as to cover much of the material in your hour of study.
Just like we directors advise our families, READ YOUR GUIDE. I suggest the same thing - READ your LRN! The big idea here is that if we can teach our students to study efficiently and effectively, it will go a LONG way in assisting them in their studies. Be consistent with the process, and you will be amazed at how much Latin you can learn.
3-Prong Folder: I print this document and put it in an inexpensive 3-prong folder. I like my verb charts to be in color. This way, the charts are always in the same order, AND they can have it open easily while they are doing exercises. I usually have my student tabs the 3-4 most often used chart with those removable tabs.
LEFT- VOCAB: I suggest keeping a good vocabulary list for the material you are studying in the left pocket. Find one by Lesson and by part of speech. (Remember that when you are doing exercises and translating, the best resource is your glossary.)
RIGHT-GRAMMAR: I like to keep a quick review Grammar Q&A resource on the right so as a parent I can quickly review with my student.
Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
