Introductory Latin Intensive
Fall 2019
with Renée Harris

Thinking ahead to CC’s Henle Latin in Challenge with a little trepidation? Wondering how to stay one step ahead of your student without wearing yourself thin trying to keep up? Has your student already begun Challenge, but you’ve been left in the dust with Latin studies? I’m here to help by offering a Latin Intensive this Fall for any parent interested in previewing the Challenge A material and gaining a solid foothold in the new land we call Latin Studies.

What am I offering on this day of study together?

  • Experience from teaching Latin in Challenge A at Classical Conversations for 5 years
  • thorough introduction to the 5 noun cases of Latin, giving extra focus to the tricky 3rd declension
  • An introduction to verb conjugations of Latin in the present, imperfect, and future tenses
  • Guidance in using the tools of the Henle system
  • Tips for organizing for better study habits
  • Specific ways to work with your student at home by integrating skills learned in Essentials – even if you, the teacher parent, cannot keep up with our Latin coursework

This Intensive is intended to help equip you to excel in your role as lead learner in your home so that you are able to model “doing hard things” for your student. Latin is not really difficult, but it is complex and time-consuming as a beginner trying to unravel the system. I’m here to introduce you to ‘a system.’

Many families have attended the Introductory Intensive multiple times and benefitted from the repetition.
We recommend this Introductory Intensive be a prerequisite for the Advanced Intensive offered the following week.

Please see details below for a NEW ADVANCED Latin Intensive that will pick up where this one leaves off and will introduce material covered in Challenge B and beyond! These two Intensives back-to-back will be extremely comprehensive and beneficial to current and rising Challenge parents!

The details of this Intensive:
When? Saturday, August 17th, 9am - 4pm
Who? Any CC parent who is interested in beginning to learn Latin or would benefit from attending a second time
Where? TBD
Cost? $55
Requirements? The Henle Latin First Year Blue and Purple Books, a notebook, and highlighters

To register: Please contact Renée Harris at moandna@yahoo.com to register.

This will be a fast-paced day designed for adults. This is not geared for students, but students may attend with the parent for $35, as long as the parent understands we are covering the material Challenge A will take an entire school year to introduce. {Very few students would benefit from this long and detail-filled day.}

Pre-registration for this event is required as each participant will receive a seminar booklet with handouts and a place to take notes. Childcare is not available; please make arrangements for younger children at home. Participants must bring a lunch and drinks for the day. We will take a break for lunch and use the break for fellowship and a time of Q&A.

Advanced Latin Intensive 2019
with Kristie Fox
Have you already been introduced to Latin nouns at the amazing Latin Intensive taught by Renée Harris?  Are you ready to take on verbs?  Is your student diving headlong into Challenge B or Challenge I and you want to help them wrap their head around all the different forms of Latin Verbs?  Is your student way ahead and you want to be able to interact with their studies?
What am I offering on this day of study together?

  • thorough introduction to the principal parts of the Latin verb
  • A specific model for how to “Build” a Latin Verb
  • A comparison of the Active and Passive Voice in Latin
  • An introduction to the subjunctive mood in Latin
  • A specific model for using the Five Common Topics to help you and your student learn as much Latin as you can efficiently
  • Resources for guiding your student when you cannot keep up with the Latin coursework
  • Resources that you can use to accommodate different learning styles for each student
This Intensive is intended to help further equip you to excel in your role as lead learner in your home. There are many studies on the “best way to learn” a language and the number one recommendation is CONSISTENCY. We hope that these Latin Intensives help you see Latin as approachable and with the right model and DAILY effort, you will see great progress in your student’s Latin knowledge.

It is important to note that you need to have attended the Introductory Latin Intensive or have a solid foundation of Latin basics from your own studies. Renée and Kristie have intentionally planned these events back-to-back so families can benefit from the foundational and continuing elements presented within them.

Where? TBD

Latin can be surprisingly fun and engaging, once the fear of the unknown can be conquered.
Let's conquer that together! We hope we'll see you at these Intensives!
