Parsing

Oh the Beloved Parsing Problem!

All the "people" say we should parse our Latin sentences, but WHY?   It takes SO long.

Some of the recommendations go back to what we did in Essentials.  If you can remember far enough back, someone told you that you (and your student) were going to learn to diagram sentences.  I am guessing that maybe had you worried.  It definitely did me.  However, my super wise Essentials Tutor talked me down and encouraged me to just try ONE SENTENCE a day.  If you learned to use the Analytical Task Sheets, then you had a simple form for what to do for Tasks 1-6.  Lo and behold, three years later, my kids were very confident in their parsing and diagramming skills.

I really recommend that you have your student parse to completion at least 1-2 sentences a day.  It can come straight from the exercises where you have a sentence as part of the exercise.  It can be from Latin to English (the easier way) OR from English to Latin (the more difficult direction).  Just as you did with your student, you can start with Question Confirmation and look for the parts you know.  Early in your students, you may not be able to parse every word, just go as far as you can.

It really is like a puzzle and I highly recommend trying it.  Your student will really grow as they develop this skill.

Check out the very last page of our Latin Resource Notebook (Link on the far left sidebar) or watch the slideshow found here for details on how to go about this process.  With practice and repetition, you and your student will find great success.
